The local council area leading the EV charge - Bay 93.9

Demand for electric vehicles is continuing to accelerate with new data revealing sales leapt by 117 per cent in Victoria during the three months to June – and one local municipality is leading the charge.

Registration data from VicRoads reveals the city of Wyndham now has the third-highest number of battery-only vehicles in the state, behind only Boroondara in Melbourne’s leafy east, and the city of Monash.

Wyndham also has the second-highest take-up of hybrid vehicles.

More Victorians now own EVs than any other state in Australia, with one in ten cars sold here running purely on batteries.

Areas with the lowest take-up of electric vehicles include Swan Hill and West Wimmera.

Victoria’s dominance in the EV market comes despite a report by the Electric Vehicle Council that found that buyers here are more than $1000 worse off than those in other states, where a range of incentives are on offer.

It also found Victoria has the world’s worst taxation policy when it comes to battery powered vehicles.

Australians purchased more EVs in the first six months of 2023 than in all of 2022.
