Glenorchy community dives into action to save local pool - Pulse Hobart

The Glenorchy community are rallying to save their local pool after it was closed indefinitely due to safety concerns last month.

A leak in the shell of the 60-year-old Glenorchy Memorial Pool, several structural issues and a complete overhaul price tag of around $30m-$40m mean the pool might not open again.

The closure has devastated many in the community who have fond memories of the pool,

A Facebook group dedicated to saving the pool has gained over 1,100 members and a petition to replace the pool has garnered a similar amount of signatures.

The supporters will hold a community meeting at the Glenorchy Library on Tuesday night to discuss efforts to save the pool.

Petition organiser Karen Scott said the pool had been a ‘place of fitness and fun for thousands over many decades’.

“These types of suburban facilities can’t be under valued. They enrich life in the local area and give hundreds of people much needed respite in the warmer months,” Scott wrote online.

“And more importantly – they promote fitness, fun and wellbeing – all of which contribute to better mental health.”

She said the pool could be a “major drawcard for the City of Glenorchy”.

“With so much rich history here in Hobart, and icons of times long and more recently passed disappearing … it would be a crying shame to see this one go the same way.”

The group hopes to send a message to state and federal representatives to lobby for funding to replace the pool.

After announcing the closure, Glenorchy mayor Bec Thomas said the 60-year-old pool “has served its community extremely well over the last 60 years.”

She said the Council had “no option but to keep the pool closed”.

“We cannot risk the safety of the public or the people who staff the facility,” she said.
