12 of our favourite scrunchies from local labels - Fashion Journal

WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE AND CAITLIN CEFAI

Giving fabric offcuts a new life.

The word ‘scrunchie‘ is loaded with nostalgia. For me, it evokes memories of primary school, particularly my mum yanking my unruly hair into a ponytail each morning and the little dresses she made me with matching scrunchies.

A fashion mainstay in the ’80s and ’90s, the scrunchie fell out of fashion’s favour in the 2000s. But in recent years it’s been having somewhat of a resurgence, with high-end labels like Celine and Prada championing the humble hair accessory.

Keep up to date with ethical designers over at our Fashion section.

The best part about scrunchies – aside from their ability to minimise hair breakage –  is that they provide fashion labels with an easy way to make use of their fabric offcuts while allowing us consumers to buy into a trend without feeling quite so guilty. Below, we’ve curated 12 of our favourite scrunchies from Australian and New Zealand labels.

Kate Sylvester

New Zealand designer Kate Sylvester is well recognised for her use of colour and pattern, so her seasonal drops of scrunchies, made from the label’s fabric offcuts, are worth keeping an eye on. We’re loving this sheer check in red for a wearable yet vibrant iteration.
