As of 26 September 2021, the ACT's vaccination rate continues to lead the country, with more than 61 per cent of residents aged 16 and older double-dosed.

New South Wales has announced an easing of restrictions once the state achieves 70 per cent full vaccination rates. Vaccination coverage in NSW stands at more than 85 per cent having had at least one dose, with just over 60 per cent fully vaccinated.

In Victoria, Melbourne's lockdown will remain in place until 70 per cent of people in the state are double-vaccinated, which is forecast for 26 October.

Victoria and South Australia have vaccinated 47 per cent of over-16s while Queensland and Western Australia are on 45 per cent.

Vaccination modelling for Indigenous populations suggests the 80 per cent target for first nations Queenslanders won't be achieved until February 2022.

The Northern Territory has a 51 per cent two-dose vaccination rate.

Why 70 per cent?

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has told state leaders Australia will need to learn how to live with the virus, in order to begin re-opening.

He's insisted the country can not live in lockdown forever, saying a "gear change" will occur when the fully vaccinated rate reaches 70 per cent.

"At some point, you need to make that gear change and that is done at 70 per cent because that's where we are advised from the medical science that you can make that gear change," he has said.
