Spike in number plaguing Victoria - NEWS.com.au

Victoria has recorded 246 new local cases of coronavirus, the state’s biggest spike in daily infections in more than a year - with more than half of them unlinked.

Victoria has recorded 246 new local cases of coronavirus on Monday as the state powers towards its first vaccine milestone.

Of the new infections just 121 were linked to known cases and outbreaks.

It’s the biggest daily surge in cases since Victoria’s deadly second wave last year when 266 cases were recorded on August 16.

About 60.29 per cent of Victorians have received at least one jab, with the state aiming for 70 per cent before some restrictions can be eased.

Reaching the 70 per cent target was initially thought to happen on September 23 but Premier Daniel Andrews flagged rules could be eased as soon as September 19.

The following restrictions have been flagged to ease:

• The 5km travel radius will increase to 10km

• Exercise will increase from two to three hours a day

• Outdoor gym equipment and skate parks will reopen

• Outdoor personal training will be allowed with up to two people plus the trainer

• Childminding for school-age children will be allowed if both parents are critical workers

• Construction sites will increase to a 50 per cent capacity when 90 per cent of workers have received at least one vaccine dose

• Inspections of unoccupied premises will be permitted

Health authorities will front the media later on Monday.
