Alex Rance makes football return in local league - SEN

Alex Rance has made a return to the football field after a two year hiatus, pulling on the Seymour jumper in the Goulburn Valley League on Saturday afternoon.

Despite being renowned as one of the best defenders the game has ever seen, the former Tiger played out the game as a forward and midfielder.

He finished goalless, but gave off a few score assists and told the Herald Sun “it was more about fun than anything else".

“I didn’t trouble the scorers too much, I kicked one point and gave a couple off,” Rance said.

“I was a little bit nervous on the drive up but once I got here it was business as usual.

“I never thought I would really play anywhere but Ben Clifton (Seymour captain) is a good mate of mine and we thought we would have a kick together.”

Seymour coach Ben Davey was also thrilled about the lift Rance gave the club, both on and off the field.

“Alex is such a good guy,” Davey said.

“He trained Thursday night and it was immediately visible to everybody he wasn’t just here to run around.

“He was here to win a game of footy. He kicked with the younger guys for 30 minutes after training.

“After our meeting, I came out and he was there cleaning up the tables and putting chairs away.

“That is the quality of the man besides the fact he is an absolute gun.”

Rance announced his retirement from AFL Football in December 2019, looking to spend more time with his family and focusing on his faith.

The 31 year-old missed Richmond’s 2019 premiership after suffering a ruptured ACL in the first round of that season.
