Local businesses are benefitting from a $104.8 million investment in the Rockhampton economy thanks to Rockhampton Regional Council’s local buy policy.

The policy which supports the procurement of local goods and services across Council’s projects delivers economic benefit to over 800 businesses in the region, including catering suppliers right through to electrical and civil constructions.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said Council had a strong commitment to supporting local business and ensuring Council spread the benefits of its projects and procurement across the region.

“Of the total $140 million spent by the Council, an overwhelming majority is directed towards businesses and services operating within the Rockhampton Region,” Mayor Williams said.

“This is an excellent outcome and a really clear demonstration of our priorities.

“We want to see local business grow and thrive and one way we can do that is ensuring we support Rockhampton jobs and industry through our Council projects and services.”

The Annual Goods and Services Spend Analysis details Council’s 2022-23 local spend results including:

  • Excluding specialised significant projects, 73% of spend within the Rockhampton region
  • 97% of total spend across plant and equipment hire, trade services and roadmaking materials within region
  • Over $20 million spent on locally supplied materials and operators

Mayor Williams said these results furthered Rockhampton Regional Council’s position as a Small Business Friendly Council.

“We take our status as a Small Business Friendly Council seriously and know the spending power we have as a significant regional council,” Mayor Williams said.

“I encourage all local businesses to familiarise themselves with our local procurement policies and processes, particularly our Local Preference Policy, and help make sure we are keeping more of the spend we generate local.”

Looking to supply goods or services to Council?

A local suppliers and contractors guide is available on Council’s website and provides a range of information to assist anyone who wishes to supply goods or service to Rockhampton Regional Council. Tender opportunities are also listed regularly.

About Council’s Local Preference Policy:

Council’s longstanding Local Preference Policy benefits the Region’s economy by providing clear direction to buy local and support the local economy.

The policy gives local business a 12% weighting for goods and services under $1 million and a minimum 5% weighting for greater than $1 million.

For projects over $150,000, tenderers who nominate local suppliers and sub-contractors for goods and services for use in the project to a minimum value of 50% of the tendered sum also receive a weighting of 10%.

The policy is available on Council’s website here: rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au/About-Council/Policies-Procedures/Procurement.
