Christmas is only a few weeks away, which makes now an ideal time to get those last-minute presents for friends and loved ones.

Shopping local isn’t just a convenient way to pick up Christmas gifts, it’s an important way that you can help to support our local artists, makers and businesses.

Fortunately, Canberra is bursting at the seams with options for thoughtful gift ideas.

Gift a membership

A membership to one of Canberra’s many attractions is the gift that will keep giving all year long.

Often memberships include not only access to exhibitions, but invites to special events, discounts at gift shops and free access to play spaces (like the Tim and Gina Fairfax Discovery Centre at the National Museum of Australia!).

Here are some memberships that are available to buy:

Celebrate with a meal

Some people are harder to shop for: think of that friend that seems to have everything, or the family member who’s not keen on extra “stuff”. For tricky recipients like these, a meal out is the perfect solution.

Whether it’s a fine dining experience or a casual meal, the quality time and delicious fare will no doubt be appreciated.

Alternatively, many restaurants and cafes sell gift cards so you can shout your recipient coffees or treat them to a delicious meal in the new year.

Buy second-hand

Buying something second-hand is better for the planet, and often better for your budget!

There are plenty of op shops, second hand bookshops, markets and antique stores that are filled with treasures.

Support a charity

While op shopping can be a great way to support a charity, a donation on behalf of someone makes a thoughtful and meaningful gift.

This time of the year can be tough for some families, and donations can make a big difference to those in need.

Hit the markets

No matter which side of town you live on, you can always count on there being a market nearby – particularly at Christmas time.

Attend a workshop

When it comes to workshops or classes, there are a few different approaches. You could take a class to learn how to make a gift such as jewellery, clothing, or art.

Alternatively, you could purchase a ticket to a workshop as a gift for someone else.

Purchase a voucher

Between feeling exhausted and having a busy schedule at the end of the year, self-care often falls to the wayside.

A voucher to a local business like a spa or hairdresser is a great way to give someone a much-needed pick-me-up.

Buy a piece of art

Whether it’s a piece of jewellery, art and craft, homewares, or a beautifully designed piece of furniture, you can visit local boutiques or shop direct from Canberra artists.

Your one-stop-shop

The Canberra and Region Visitors Centre (CRVC) stocks a huge range of locally made products that make perfect gifts.

Visit CRVC at Regatta Point to fill your stockings up with local wine, tea, socks, jewellery and other delightful knick knacks.

While you’re there, speak to the friendly CRVC team members about local events. Whether you’re into sports, arts and crafts or food and wine, they can help you plan your summer schedule.
