Cockburn councillors kicked a last-gasp winner for sports clubs based at Lucius Park in Spearwood during their deliberations over the city’s 2023-24 financial budget.
After some to-ing and fro-ing during the June 29 meeting, the council ultimately supported an amendment to allocate $50,000 for “immediate” remedial works for the Lucius Park changerooms.
The remedial works will include fixing shower curtains, lockers, power points and other general amenities in the clubrooms.
The sporting ground is predominantly used by the Dalmatinac Sport & Community Club and the Cockburn City Soccer Club.
Cockburn City Soccer Club president Heidi Lazarro said the club had waited a long time for funding to be approved.
“There are only four changerooms that are available and a little tiny physio room,” she said.
“I can’t remember when that building was built but it’s had no maintenance for a very long time.”
Ms Lazarro said the soccer club accessed the park three to four times a week, while weekends could draw crowds of up to 300 spectators on game day.
The club previously asked for major funding to be considered when it was in the running to be training base for an international team participating in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which kicks off in cities across Australia and New Zealand next week.
Cockburn acting chief operations manager Joe Saraceni said there would be minimal interruption for the clubs that operate at Lucius Park.
“There is not yet an estimated time for completion, however we expect the work to be finished this calendar year,” he said.
“The city doesn’t expect that these minor upgrades at Lucius Park will create significant interruptions.”
Planning has already begun.
