A Massive New Coles Local (With Oasis Bakery Treats) Opens in South Melbourne - Broadsheet

The latest Coles Local (aka the bougie Coles) has opened in South Melbourne’s Clarendon Centre. Billed as a one-stop shop for at-home entertaining, the new store is a former Coles that’s been revamped into the brand’s 20th smaller, boutique “Local” supermarket.

What makes this one different is its partnership with Oasis Bakery, a specialty Middle Eastern boutique grocer. Twenty Oasis products – including tzatziki, baba ganoush and taramasalata; deli meats like hot sopressa and ham off the bone; mini pizzas with toppings such as chicken, and lamb and feta; and pink-salt crisps – will be stocked at the outpost, which is just an eight-minute walk from the South Melbourne Market.

You’ll also find all the innovations featured at the other Coles Locals, including loaves from Laurent that you can prep with the self-serve bread warmer and slicer.

Getting hungry in the aisles? A frozen dessert bar features single-serve ice-creams, mochi and frozen macarons, plus you can pick up fresh soups and salads from Foxes Den; pizza bases from 400 Gradi; poultry, sausages, steaks and more from Meatsmith; and treats like the Brooklyn Blackout Cake from Cremorne Street Bakers.

Even your four-legged friend is catered for, with a scoop-and-weigh station filled with pet treats such as bright pink Berry Love Biscuits, Cranberry Booster Chews and venison jerky.

Coles’s general manager of store development and Coles Local, Jon Haggett, cited North American grocery chains including Whole Foods, Erewhon, Wegmans and Trader Joe’s as sources of inspiration for the brand. These chains have inspired cult followings, countless product rankings, Halloween costumes and media attention, and they’ve brought in serious cash.

The Coles Local model will continue to roll out across Australia, with several new stores coming in the next three years. The next one is due to open in the Brisbane suburb of Taringa later this year.
