The Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo is currently showcasing a fascinating exhibition on Microcars encompassing a number of brands including Messerschmidt, BMW, and Heinkel, born out of post war Europe when many factories no longer making military hardware re-tooled to meet another demand – cheap affordable wheels available for the masses.
Several Australian microcars were created, the Lightburn Zeta and in Sydney the Goggomobil and Goggomobil Dart, the brainchild of Bill Buckle.
Who could forget the Goggo and who can forget the innovative Bill Buckle – from an automotive family background a relatively young Bill Buckle developed the fibreglass Buckle Coupe and then the innovative Goggo, the Dart sports car made famous by the Yellow Pages commercial.
Bill today at 95, is still as innovative, drives an electric Tesla 3 and today laments the current lack of local manufacture – see Bill’s journey with his treasured Goggo Dart on the Powerhouse video on my podcast site.
