Katherine region enters lockdown after one new local COVID case - Sky News Australia

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner has announced the Katherine region will enter full lockdown for 72 hours after a new local COVID case was recorded.

Mr Gunner said the man who had tested positive had not travelled outside of the territory recently and spent a limited time in the community while infectious in both Darwin and the Katherine region.

“That means he caught the virus inside the territory. We don’t know where and we don’t know when but this is community transmission,” he said.

The Katherine region will enter lockdown from midnight for 72 hours until midnight on Sunday because it has not reached 80 per cent vaccination coverage.

However, the Greater Darwin region, which has a higher vaccination rate, will enter a lockout for the next 72 hours.

“Under this pandemic footing, only fully vaccinated people have free movement and free access,” he said.

“If you are in the Greater Darwin region and you are not fully vaccinated then you are under a lockdown order and you can only leave your home for one of the five reasons.”
