LOCAL gallopers fared well with Taree trainers Tony Ball, John Hughes and Glen Milligan having wins at Manning Valley Race Club's Taree Cup meeting at Bushland Drive.
Ball and Aaron Bullock combined for a 1.5 lengths win with gelding Xtra Approval ($15) in the Marvellous Stuart Smith Maiden Showcase Plate over 1000m, but didn't have any luck with Clearly Regal ($5) in the Zulu Club Country Magic Showcase Handicap over 1250m.
Xtra Approval was bought from Rockhampton and in scoring by 1.5 lengths gave Ball confidence that he may have a Country Championships galloper in his stable.
But it was Clearly Regal which was lucky to stay on its legs after hit sideways by Grafton's Canexcell ($8) just before the winning post when leading, resulting in a protest.
Stewards dismissed the protest as the incident took place when Canexcell was close to the finishing line and was in front.
Ball said his jockey Bullock "thought he was gone" but Clearly Regal luckily didn't fall.
Glen Milligan and his apprentice jockey Georgina McDonnell had a just over length win with Swamp Nation ($9), which made it two wins in a row, in the Eddies Fresh Chickens Showcase Class 1 Handicap over 1250m.
Swamp Nation, bought for $8000 as a yearling, led all the way.
Taree trainer Colin Hughes and jockey Reece Jones combined for a neck win with three-year-old filly Wokenwithakiss ($3.50) in the Sky Racing World Country Maiden Showcase over 1400m.
The closest finish of the meeting, with the first five gallopers being within a neck of one another, was won by a nose by Rebel's Edge ($21), trained at Muswellbrook by Cassandra Stummer and ridden by Ashley Morgan, in the Bakewell Haulage Wingham Celebrations Showcase over 1250m.
Newcastle six-year-old mare She's Independent ($10), a late nomination, kept up her good form at the track for trainer Paul Perry with Rachael Murray scoring by just under a length in the Manning River Hotel Showcase over 1600m.
In nine starts at the track, the mare has had four wins and three placings.
Coffs Harbour gelding Bel Academy ($2), trained by Brad Munro and ridden by Raymond Spokes, made it four wins from its past eight starts in scoring by just under a half-length in the Taree Kia Manning Lightning Handicap over 1000m to send favourite backers home in a good mood after the last race.
