Mosman Park: On and Off cafe offers new flavours to local shopping centre - PerthNow

Mosman Park has a new cafe that should be right on trend for the breakfast set, with its fusion-style menu and a standout bright yellow, lampshade-style Insta-wall.

So why would cafe owner Soo Chan Cha already be pondering a shift towards a more classic cafe, just one week in?

“First week it was challenging because ... people need some time to get used to it, especially in the Mosman Park area,” he said.

“When I decided to open it, I wanted it to be a young, new culture, Instagram-my cafe but what I feel now is maybe I need to make it a little bit classic because of the people coming to the shopping centre.

“The main thing that I really need to do is I need to be within the community.

“As long as they recognise who you are, they come and say hello, but it really takes time to set it up.”

It’s not Mr Cha’s first foray into food and coffee but it is his first in the western suburbs. He also runs Steamlab Coffee and Tea on the ground floor of an Applecross office building.

“The customer base (in Applecross) is many cyclists and office people. They come to our cafe to have a coffee and a meeting,” he said.

“But in Mosman Park, which is in a shopping centre, they’re coming for the shopping and not for brunch.

“I need to know what people like, so I’ll listen and be changing to what they want.”

With an Instagram wall and yellow-themed interior, Mr Cha said he wanted On and Off to be a young, hip place with “good vibes” perfect for social media.

He said the name came from the blinking lights featured on the Instagram wall and the “on and off” feeling in the morning.

“When you wake up and go to a cafe, the coffee is like the ‘on switch’,” he said.

Mr Cha said he hoped to bring something new and diverse to the Mosman Park community in both the aesthetic and signature dishes.

“I come from Korea – we’ve got so many cafes and there’s big competition,” he said.

“They’re always creative and caught up with the new culture.

“I want to bring in some Korean cuisine like Korean crispy fried chicken. I’m also thinking of bringing gelato ice cream here.”
