Media statements - $5 million program to revegetate Wheatbelt and support local jobs - Media Statements

  • McGowan Government allocates $5 million towards Wheatbelt Revegetation Program through Green Jobs Initiative
  • 250 hectares of native vegetation corridors to be revegetated with 80 hectares already completed
  • Secures future road safety upgrade areas while delivering environmental benefits
  • Green Jobs Initiative providing employment and procurement opportunities for regional and Aboriginal businesses

The McGowan Government has allocated $5 million, over the next three years, to revegetate approximately 250 hectares of land in the Wheatbelt through the Green Jobs Initiative.

The Main Roads Wheatbelt Revegetation Bank program has already revegetated 80 hectares of land at five Wheatbelt locations.

These areas will be used as environmental offsets for future road projects, compensating for the loss of roadside vegetation where there is a need to widen roads for safety reasons.

As part of the Green Jobs Initiative, the program is providing employment and procurement opportunities for regional and Aboriginal businesses, in the supply of native seedlings, site preparation and planting.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The first year of the Wheatbelt Revegetation Bank Program is making excellent progress and I look forward to seeing the results of these projects throughout the Wheatbelt.

"This innovative approach represents a sustainable means of enabling critical road safety upgrades whilst expanding green corridors in the Wheatbelt.

"It will support a number of opportunities for local and Aboriginal businesses through our Green Jobs Initiative."
