The Rions have won the Triple J Unearthed High 2021 competition with their original single ‘Night Light’.

The four boys from Barrenjoey High were one of five finalists shortlisted for the national music award, selected from over 1,400 high school entries. The Rions are made up of schoolmates Noah Blockley, Tom Partington, Asher McLean and Harley Wilson.

The award was announced yesterday (Thursday, 19 August) by Triple J Breakfast hosts Bryce and Ebony in a Zoom meeting with the band that was joined by fellow musicians Lime Cordiale, Tones and I, and Spacey Jane to surprise them with the news.

The indie-rock sound of The Rions has seen them compared to the likes of Australian heavy hitters Ocean Alley and Lime Cordiale. Announcing the win, Triple J said of the band, “Together they’re a festival force in the making, exuding charismatic rock’n’roll energy.”

Triple J Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe said picking a winner was difficult given the quality of entries.

“In the end, Sydney’s The Rions edged ahead of the competition by presenting an undeniable all-round package that impressed all of us at Triple J Unearthed, not to mention the Triple J textline which popped off with every play of their roaring single ‘Night Light’.

“With their mainstage-ready confidence and urgent indie hooks, this foursome is ready to launch and we reckon that the Unearthed High crown will be the rocket fuel to send them flying,” said Mr Howe.

As winners, The Rions will head into the Triple J studios to record their next single when COVID-19 restrictions ease. Their prize also includes professional industry advice from a senior music manager and a mentoring session with fellow Northern Beaches band Lime Cordiale.

Unearthed High has been running since 2007. George Alice took out the title in 2019 and has offered The Rions a support slot on her national tour next year.
