Victoria records 13 local COVID cases as state prepares for lockdown extension - ABC News

Victoria recorded 13 local COVID-19 cases on Monday, including four announced yesterday, ahead of a decision about the length of the lockdown extension.

Of the new cases, 12 have been linked to the current outbreaks and one is under investigation.

There were 49,454 test results received yesterday, and 17,083 vaccine doses were administered at state-run sites.

The lockdown was initially scheduled to end at midnight Tuesday, but Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed yesterday it would be extended.

He said the number of cases, the chains of transmission, and whether or not all of the cases were linked to current outbreaks were the three factors that would determine how long restrictions would last.

Senior government figures will meet from 10:15am, with Mr Andrews expected to deliver a press conference after that.

Earlier this morning, Deakin University epidemiologist Catherine Bennett was optimistic authorities had the state's COVID-19 outbreak under control.

But she warned the potency of the Delta strain made it imperative all cases were identified, to stop more outbreaks developing quickly.

"You don't have to have 15 minutes face to face (to become infected), it can be someone moving into the footfall of someone who has just moved on," she said.

Yesterday, Mr Andrews said close to 16,000 primary close contacts had been identified in Victoria.

Some state opposition members are calling for coronavirus restrictions to be eased in parts of regional Victoria where no infections have been detected.

However, a map released by the Department of Health showed close contacts scattered across most parts of the state.

Victoria's COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar has apologised for long queues at testing centres in Mildura, but said this morning that no new cases had emerged in the city.

Two cases have so far been confirmed in Mildura — a man in his 30s who was infected at the MCG in Melbourne, and another person believed to be a close contact of the man.

Mr Weimar said it was possible more cases would emerge in Mildura, but there had been no further cases identified yesterday.

"We're going to be with you for the long haul, we'll be with you for the next couple of weeks as we go through all these potential exposure sites, as we deal with anybody who might be symptomatic," he said.

Mr Weimar said additional health teams arrived last night from the Goulburn Valley to help with testing, and more teams would arrive from Melbourne today.
