Two new local cases of COVID recorded in Queensland - Brisbane Times

Ms Palaszczuk also paid tribute to 10 staff at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital who “put their life at risk” to help a COVID-positive patient who went into anaphylactic shock.

“They went in, they saved her life - I’m so proud,” she said.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the staff had been wearing personal protective equipment but felt it might have been compromised because they were in a rush to help the patient.

“All 10 staff were vaccinated - one of them was just waiting for their second dose because it wasn’t due yet,” she said.

“Despite that, because we’ve been very, very cautious with the Delta variant, which is what the patient does have. All 10 have gone into quarantine for 14 days and will be regularly tested in quarantine.”

There are now 49 active cases in Queensland and more than 14,900 tests were performed.

Almost 6000 people were quarantining at home.

Police handed out 204 masks on Wednesday, bringing the total to 1149.

Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said some people were doing the wrong thing, including a man in the Lockyer Valley, who claimed to be a “sovereign citizen” and despite repeated warnings, refused to wear a mask and was fined.

“Another male person at Dalby, despite being given several directions, continued to spit at police - so that person was fined as well,” he said.

The Check In Qld app becomes mandatory for more businesses from Friday, with 72,000 users registering in the past two weeks.

It has been nine days since south-east Queensland went into four-day snap lockdown after a hospital receptionist was infectious with the Delta variant in the community for 10 days.

Despite battling multiple coronavirus clusters, the state has avoided an uncontrolled outbreak and has consistently recorded new cases in the single digits.

Masks continue to be mandatory in south-east Queensland until July 16.
