Brisbane and Moreton Bay COVID-19 lockdown to end despite five local cases, QLD Premier reveals - 7NEWS.com.au

More than 1.5 million southeast Queenslanders are set to freed from lockdown despite the state recording five new locally-acquired coronavirus cases overnight.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday announced the state’s snap three day lockdown would end as planned for all regions except Brisbane and Moreton Bay at 6pm on Friday.

The lockdown was extended by 24 hours for those areas after a mother and daughter from Carindale tested positive for the virus after visiting several venues while infectious.

Palaszczuk on Saturday morning said the restrictions would be lifted at 6pm on Saturday, thanking residents for their co-operation in locking down for an extra day, but she stressed “we are not out of the woods yet”.

She urged Brisbanites to abide by mandatory mask wearing rules and urged businesses not to allow customers into their premises without using their phones to check in.

Queensland now has 47 active cases, with authorities most concerned about three out of the five new locally-acquired infections.

These include a baggage handler at Brisbane Domestic Airport, whose positive result was picked up by routine testing. He is not linked to a known contact.

A healthcare worker at Prince Charles Hospital - a woman in her 50s from Everton Park - also tested positive after completing one shift while infectious. She had not worked in the COVID-19 ward and had received her first vaccination.

Another case is a 29-year-old Brisbane man who travelled to Eumundi on the Sunshine Coast for a holiday on June 27. He is a relative of a case confirmed on Friday.

The premier said health authorities would be “very closely monitoring” the local cases.

Under the lockdown, residents were only allowed to leave their home for essential shopping, exercising, essential work or study that cannot be done from home, caregiving or to access healthcare, including getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

Masks remain mandatory outside the home in all areas that were subject to the initial lockdown, including all 11 local government areas in southeast Queensland, Townsville, Magnetic and Palm Islands.

New restrictions

  • Residents must wear a mask at all times outside the home, including in workplaces, where safe to wear a mask and you cannot physically distance, on public transport and when doing non-vigorous exercise.
  • You must be seated to drink or eat in cafés and restaurants, and businesses and venues are allowed one person per 4m² inside and one person per 2m² outdoors, while smaller venues up to 200m² are allowed one person per 2m² with a maximum of 50 people.
  • Private gatherings are restricted to 30 people, and up to 100 people can attend weddings and funerals.
  • Only 20 people can dance at weddings.
