Beer tourism taps into visitor thirst for local craft brewers - ABC Local

Wine regions have long been established as tourism destinations in their own right and now craft breweries are hoping to emulate their success. Cairns Brewery Tours operator Konrad Borowiecki believes he's 'tapped' into a strong desire of visitors to experience 'localism' and if it comes in the form of a locally brewed and poured pint, all the better.

"There's some amazing breweries and distilleries up here, creating unique tastes in funky locations, they're obviously competing with each other but at the same time they're all working together, they're supporting each other, and I love that about the industry. It's really great to see."

Coral Sea Brewing head brewer Morgan Hind says it's a 'win-win' situation as the tours deliver customers to his door to taste his 'tropically inspired' brews and hopefully, to increase awareness and demand for his products when they get home.

Mr Hind believes it's a great addition to the far north Queensland tourism offering, while also helping small businesses take on the might of the big brewers.

"Obviously we've got the reef, the rainforest and all the rest of it but sometimes people just want to have a day off and being able to experience some of the cool things that this little city has to offer is really special."

"(Beer) is definitely a hard market to crack so we've had to sort of pivot our business model and go more toward the tap house, tap room sort of thing.

"We only opened the bar about 12 months ago but it's been a game changer for us , it really puts a face to the brewery, I guess."

His is one of thousands of micro-breweries across Australia benefiting from recent excise relief which came into effect on July 1, which Mr Hind says is helping to diversify and expand his business including breaking through to the mainstream liquor store shelves.
