Victoria records another new COVID case as state’s run of no local transmission ends - 7NEWS.com.au

Victoria has recorded another case of coronavirus a day after the state broke its three-month run of no local transmission.

On Tuesday, Acting Premier James Merlino confirmed there had been a new local case recorded after midnight and was not included in the morning’s figures.

This brings the total number of local cases to five.

The new case has been linked to the outbreak in the Whittlesea area and could be the source case as he was symptomatic before the first person tested positive.

On Tuesday, Merlino also announced restrictions have been reimposed in Greater Melbourne that will come into effect from 6pm on Tuesday.

Private gatherings will be limited to five visitors per day, public gatherings are limited to 30 people and masks will need to be worn indoors unless an exemption is applicable.

On Monday, the health department confirmed the 87-day streak of zero local cases in the state has been broken, with four people testing positive across two households in the northern suburbs.

One of them was a man had a test on May 23 after displaying symptoms for three days, and a male relative who was asymptomatic - both of whom reside in the City of Whittlesea area.

Two further close family contacts also tested positive – a woman in her 70s and a pre-school aged child.

There could be a “missing link” between the cases as health authorities have not yet been able to match up the dates with the previous case in the returned traveller from South Australia.

Late on Monday night, the health department added multiple new sites to the exposure list in the city’s north including a second shopping centre, a Nandos, a petrol station and a Woolworths.

Highpoint Shopping Centre was listed as a high risk exposure site after one of the confirmed cases shopped there for three hours during late night shopping.

The centre management said Highpoint has undergone a deep clean and remains open for trade.
