COVID live: WA Premier Mark McGowan to give Perth update at 1:15pm AWST, as new locations added to exposure list - ABC News

Victorian opposition leader criticises Melbourne rules

Due to COVID restrictions, Anzac Day looked a bit different in many parts of the country.

In Melbourne, a crowd limit of 1,400 people at the Shrine of Remembrance meant hundreds of people watched the dawn service from behind a fence.

Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien said seeing veterans separated from their friends at the Shrine was "heartbreaking".

He has called for the state government to apologise and "admit they got it wrong".

"These are veterans who have served their country with honour, they put their lives on the line for Australia, and yet they were separated by a steel fence from participating in the dawn service this morning," he said.

Mr O'Brien said allowing just 1,400 people at the dawn service, compared to 85,000 people at the MCG, "just doesn't make sense".

"They [veterans] damn well deserved to be treated better than they were today," he said.
