Council supports local young people - Mirage News

Just because Youth Week is wrapping up, it doesn’t mean Townsville City Council is forgetting about setting up infrastructure to support young people across the city.

Council is focused on giving children and teenagers a wide range of free activities to enjoy any time of the year.

Infrastructure Services Committee chairperson Kurt Rehbein said Council had already started works reactivating Deeragun Skate Park.

“The Deeragun Skate Park is very popular with young people living on the northern side of Townsville, which is why Council has identified it as a place to reactivate through vibrant public art,” Cr Rehbein said.

“Council is proud to have Townsville artists John Bradshaw and Shane Keen on board to help spruce up the area and make it even more appealing for young people to enjoy.

“Townsville Youth Council led the engagement with the street artists and consulted with local young people on the design of the artwork to ensure it appealed to young people.

“The skate park now looks fantastic thanks to the new designs, which have been completed this week.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said kids who preferred the indoors also had plenty of activity options at their local library.

“Council has three fantastic libraries in the city, Aitkenvale and Thuringowa, which all have a huge range of activities for young people,” Cr Greaney said.

“Each library has a youth space that’s geared towards entertaining children and teenagers. This includes Playstations and other gaming consoles that are free to use.

“Reading novels isn’t for everyone, which is why our libraries also have graphic novels, magazines, and a huge range of nonfiction books to enjoy.”
