Brisbane COVID update: Queensland records one new local case as state enters ‘critical’ phase - 7NEWS.com.au

One new local case of COVID has been detected in Queensland, after a 26-year-old man tested positive to the virus.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the new case on Saturday.

The new case is a close contact of the 26-year-old man and he lives in a separate household in Strathpine.

Contact tracers are interviewing the man and are expected to update the list of exposure sites later on Saturday.

Palaszczuk said the next two days were “critical” and urged anyone with symptoms to come forward for testing.

The premier added anyone who had been to the Westfield Carindale Shopping Centre on Saturday March 20 from 12pm to 2.16pm should get tested for the virus.

Eighteen other close contacts have been identified.

Overseas arrivals halved

Palaszczuk added she has asked Scott Morrison to half the number of international arrivals flying into Queensland.

“I think this is very important for two reasons,” she told reporters.

“The first reason is we want to be able to concentrate on the contact tracing, but secondly we are seeing large numbers of positive cases that are coming in.

“Basically, every day over the last fortnight, we have been seeing five or six cases... we’re almost at the capacity of our hospitals that we were at the peak of the pandemic.

“That is not to say our hospitals cannot cope, they will be able to cope, but this large influx that we are seeing, and the high rate of people coming back, returned travellers being positive, for the next two weeks I’m asking the prime minister to half our number of overseas returning travellers.

Missing link

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said it was still unclear how the man contracted the virus but genome sequencing has directly linked his case to a case in a doctor at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

“There is probably, given timing, one intermediary between the first healthcare worker, and this gentleman we believe. There could have been two” Young said.

“There is every chance we won’t find it, because we know people can get infected and be totally asymptomatic and then pass it on.

“So we just have to work that through.
