Magic City uplifts local artist | News, Sports, Jobs - Minot Daily News

Local musician Dakotah Poitra, who performs under the name Dakotah Faye, has seen recent success with his music career. Poitra is proud to be from Minot and has been using his platform to uplift the community.

Poitra started making music at 14 in 2008 with his friend Eddie Mack. He reminisced on how he used to idolize rappers like 50 Cent who drove big Escalades with butterfly doors and wore gold “dookie chains.” He said one of his fondest memories making music was recording in his closet with nothing but a hanging blanket for noise cancellation and a rudimentary computer microphone to rap into.

His interest in rap music was fostered by his mother Bev Vondell who would listen to rap when Poitra was a child. Today, his biggest music inspiration is hip hop R&B artist Drake. Poitra said he was drawn to Drake’s ability to rap and sing in his songs, which Poitra leaned into heavily to emulate the artist in his own music.

Poitra is open about his pride for his hometown. “Minot is like, my favorite, you know what I mean? Everywhere I go I always love to tell people where I’m from and they get all these weird looks on their faces, ‘Where is that?’ But it’s the best. It’s where I started doing all my shows.”

He reflected on his first show, which he said was in the basement of another local artist’s home with no shoes on, looking at the floor and scared to make eye contact with the audience of 10 people.

Poitra is celebrating nine months of recovery from cocaine and alcohol use. He said he was so caught in the cycle of trying to catch up on sleep and sanity, he stopped answering his phone out of embarrassment. Poitra would go on to use voicemails from loved ones checking on him while in active addiction in some of his songs.

“You never think it’s going to be you, that you’re like ‘Oh you know, I just do it once a month or occasionally’ and then it’s ‘I do it every weekend’ and then you’re doing it on weekdays and then you’re missing work and it just snowballs. All of a sudden you’re like, ‘How did I get here?'” Poitra said.

Poitra said he had always wanted to become more involved in uplifting the Minot community. With his newfound sobriety he has the time and energy to dedicate to fundraising.

In April he held a charity concert in Minot to raise funds for unpaid school lunch balances which garnered about $3,000. He later partnered with Sharon Tedder and her Food for the Summer Program which provided bags of food to families experiencing food insecurity during the summer. Since school has resumed, the program has refocused to donating funds to pay outstanding school lunch balances.

Three months ago Project BEE, a nonprofit organization that provides anti-poverty programs to rural areas, invited Poitra to join their fundraising committee. He said he feels out of place among the business professionals on the committee but that he’s honored to be part of an organization that helps the community.

“It’s another one of those reasons I fell in love with making music – my ability to be able to help other people with it and that’s another thing I kind of discovered this year about it. It’s awesome to be able to do anything to help the city.”

This coming March Poitra is set to perform at South by Southwest (SXSW), a prominent music, film and interactive media festival held in Austin, Texas. SXSW is an immersive festival for artists to gain traction and network with other musicians, which Poitra described as a rite of passage for underground rappers.

Following his SXSW tour Poitra will go on a music tour through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Poitra’s ultimate goal is to be able to pursue music as a full-time job and to make his mother proud.

“Being able to repay the person that supported me no matter what and allowed me to make mistakes in my life, that’s for sure. Just being comfortable where I’m at mentally and financially, being able to make a living off music and not have to have other jobs, that would be great – just being able to focus on that and be happy with it, you know, still enjoying it.” Poitra said, “Twenty years from now being able to still fall in love with making music – that would be my goal – not getting tired of it, not making it too much of a job.”

Scoring Goals for Local Sport: Netball Court Upgrades Begin Today - Australian Capital Territory

Every Canberran deserves access to quality local sporting facilities.

The ACT Government’s $7.5 million upgrades to the city’s five district netball facilities begin today, starting with the Solarhub ACT Netball Centre and Arawang Netball Association facility in Stirling.

In 2020, the ACT Government committed to upgrading and resurfacing netball courts across our city. Today, that promise becomes a reality.

The work planned across the city’s five district netball facilities will include improvements to playing surfaces, fencing, drainage and stormwater management. Work on the South Canberra, Belconnen and Tuggeranong facilities will commence in 2024.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry said, “Netball is one of the Canberra’s largest sports with over 12,000 participants. The 5 netball facilities are heavily utilised and these upgrades will make a real difference to local teams and players.”

“These works are the result of Netball ACT’s ongoing engagement and advocacy on behalf of the local netball community. I want to thank Netball ACT for their support and partnership.”

This initiative fulfils a commitment of the Parliamentary Agreement of the 10th Legislative Assembly by the ACT Labor-Greens Government.

Narellan Road to grow local with re-planting of native trees ... - Transport for NSW

Transport for NSW has worked in close collaboration with road maintenance contractor Ventia, Mount Annan Botanic Gardens and Greater Sydney Landcare to re-vegetate land along Narellan Road near Remembrance Drive Mount Annan with native flora.

The site had become degraded over time with invasive species beginning to take over the area.

Managing the more than eight-hectare site for Transport for NSW (Transport), Ventia and Greater Sydney Landcare have removed thousands of African Olive trees to repopulate a third of a hectare with natives.

The African Olives are considered an invasive species with thick leaf coverage effectively suffocating other plants trying to grow underneath.

By removing the olive trees, a range of native trees, shrubs and grasses being provided by Landcare will once again be encouraged to grow at the site.

Workers will be at the site repopulating the area over two days with plantings to range from seedlings to more established trees and shrubs.

Once planted, we will monitor progress to help ensure the flora is able to flourish.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to re-plant local trees in Camden which will benefit our local environment and community.

“This site will become a fantastic green space for future generations to enjoy and increase our local green canopy.

“It was a holiday home for them, they used to come down on weekends and now they’ve built a permanent home,” he said.

“It’s obviously not run-of-the-mill normal but it’s a cheaper alternative.”

The modernised 1980s caravan with annexed cabin includes two bedrooms, a lounge room, a bathroom, an open kitchen and dining area, a front deck, as well as two garden sheds.

Mr Bradley said it was one of about half-a-dozen permanent sites in the park.

He said permanent sites in caravan parks were harder to come by these days.

“It used to be a lot more normal, but most of the parks have tried to thin out the permanent sites,” he said.

“You do pay a weekly fee to the park but it’s a cheaper alternative to buying a unit.”

Current site fees are $165 per week and include water, but that will increase to $178.20 per week from December 1.

The sale – which includes just the caravan and cabin, not the land, so the buyer doesn’t have to pay stamp duty – is subject to Discovery Parks tenant application approval and a police clearance.

The new owners will have access to the park amenities, including the pool, water playground, barbecue facilities and the laundry.

Mr Bradley said it was attracting strong interest from a range of buyers so far.

Local Radio from London - Radio Today (Aust & NZ)

He’s back on home-soil in Coffs Harbour after a stint in London but he stayed on-air at Triple M Coffs Coast despite being on the other side of the world.

This week, Michael Moffett took time out of his busy schedule to chat with me about the venture.

Q: You gotta feel good to be home again?

A: It’s great to be home again. The first 2 days were some of the hottest for London in a long time, getting up to 33 degrees, and still 23 degrees at midnight when I finished the first show.

Q:  Can you tell us why you were overseas?  and how long were you away?

A:  I have always aimed to do big stuff, and to show what can be achieved in non-metro markets with small teams, and no producers if you work hard. As for this trip, it becomes a great talking point with your listeners. For me, it was also about taking our listeners to London through the stories and magic of the city via the radio show, which may also have them decide to travel to experience it themselves. 

I was there for a week doing the show, each day I would go out about 8am to record content, both audio and video, then get back to the hotel by around 3pm to cut up the audio segments and also edit the video packages. Then go through the music log to set it up for the show. Then have dinner before going live on air from 9pm – midnight local time which was 6-9am Australian time.

I had a couple of daily segments, one of the segments this year included some incredibly talented London Buskers. I recorded a quick chat and song with them – this wrapped up the show each day.

Q:  Most people would’ve said “I’m away” – but not you.  What convinced you to broadcast for Coffs from London?

A:  The first time I travelled to London, I walked around the city and like any broadcaster can relate to, I would see so many stories and so much history, especially around music, that I wanted to share with our listeners. I worked out how it could be done, convinced our team, and made it happen.

Q:  Did you take equipment with you ?  the airline would’ve loved you!!!

A:  This is the second time I’ve done it, the first was in 2019. Both times the gear all fit in my carry on luggage. Just a laptop, microphone headset, Rodecaster Pro and an internet connection. I also had my Rode WirelessGo2 for field recording.

Going through security, the airlines were actually really easy to deal with, some just asking what it was for, but mostly asking if I still had a belt on or anything in my pockets…

Q:  How complex is it to set up the equipment on arrival?

A:  The setup takes about a minute or two. Technology now allows us to be able to do so much with very little. The Rodecaster connects to my laptop, I can also take my comp line calls through my laptop. Our codec is a website that connects back to the Triple M studios called IPDTL, it was crystal clear and less than about half a second delay. I can also still fire off the songs and ads with Zetta2Go from London.

Q:  Would you do it again?  How would you do it differently?

A:  Absolutely, I would definitely do it again. Possibly next to the USA. The London trip was solo, however it would be great to look at incorporating listeners as well, likely through our local travel agent and doing a type of bucket-list tour to see it through other sets of eyes.

Q:  Where do you see yourself in the future? 

A:  Last month marked 8 years since arriving in Coffs Harbour, and about 23 years in this industry across 3 states. One thing I’ve learnt is, for me, it’s about what we can do to engage with our community, ways we can help to keep people informed and entertained daily. 

We are in an industry that allows us to do some incredible stuff if we try. Honestly, I haven’t actually set a timeline regarding where I will or want to be, sometimes that can only disappoint you. But if you set a goal to always work hard, and do things differently it makes life pretty exciting.
